Today I'm gonna check out Specter. The name sounds scary. This game was made by Lithium Labs. And the game's genre is horror...
I dislike horror, it scares me. But for some reason no roblox game has scared me before. So let's see if this game can give me some chills!
So if you first start this game, it will ask you whether you want classic or scary mode. The classic mode doesn't seem scary at all so I picked scary on default. I decided to join a random group of people. I was with a group of people who didn't communicate, which I found very annoying. Because this game is all about investigating and hunting ghosts. Communication is definitely key in this game. So I decided to rejoin and find other people to play this game with.
After I found people to play with, I tried to play the game once again. This time, the right way. Let me start by telling you what to do here.
You enter a building, could be a Luxury Home, Clinic, Hideout, Town, Asylum or Family Home. It's all up to you or the person who made the lobby. Then there's a few equipments that are standard in the game. You got EMF reader, Spiritbox, Flashlight, Ghost Goggles, Book and Thermometer. Each of these things do something different. The meaning of these equipments is trying to find out what the ghost replies to and what happens around you. I will give a small explanation of each of the objects.
Flashlight:
Obviously, a flashlight lets you see in the dark. The lights in the building will be turned off by the ghost at some point, so you need something to see in the dark.
EMF-Reader:
The EMF reader can be used to check different things. You can use it to find the ghostroom. Ghostroom basically means that the ghost is more likely to reply to paranormal things there, such as the spirit box or the book. But the EMF-reader can also be used if a ghost is near you to see the EMF level. You have EMF 1 til 5. 1 means it's not around, 2 means you've found the ghostroom. 3 and up usually means the ghost is around you or even in the room.
Book:
The book is used to find evidence. Some ghosts write in the book, others don't. It's always smart to put the book down.
Spirit Box:
The spirit box is used to communicate with the ghost. Some ghosts talk. If the box is turned on you can ask it questions such as "How old are you?", "Where are you?" and "Are you here?" If the ghost is a ghost that replies to the spirit box, you will see something in the chat talk with red letters. It also replies to "Give us a sign", usually you'll hear objects break, the toilet flush or if you placed the book down, a writing. ("Can you write in the book?" often works too, but this only works if it's a book ghost)
Thermometer:
Thermometer can help you determine whether there's freezing temperatures in a room. If it's freezing, then that's the ghost room and your evidence. But freezing doesn't always mean ghostroom. If the temperature gets below 10, then that also means ghost room.
Ghost Goggles:
Ghost Goggles can help you see orbs. Orbs are little floating purple balls around the room. Usually when you have ghost goggles on and someone has their flashlight on, you might be confused whether you saw a flashlight, normal light or an orb. So it's always smart to make sure all lights in the room are turned off.
Now that you know what these things do, I'll go a bit deeper into how the game works.
You obviously know that we have equipment now. If you press J in the game you'll see a bunch of different ghosts like Jinn, Shade, Poltergeist, Spirit, Demon and more. You opened a journal. Each ghost type is being identified, such as what kind of evidence you need. For example, freezing, spiritbox and writing (book) means it's a Demon, you can also read it in the description for Demon. Then you write down the evidence at the evidence page. Often it'll show you what ghosts type it could be if you write down one type of evidence. The more evidence you have, the more sure you can be. Also pay attention to your surroundings. This game sometimes gives you jumpscares (You can toggle that off btw) and you'll hear music play when the ghost starts hunting. When the ghost starts hunting, that means you should run. Usually it chooses a target based on how low your sanity is, so keep track on that as well.
And yes, difficulty also does something. Easy mode means that you have 5 minutes before the peace timer (the timer in the van) runs out. Within these 5 minutes, the ghost cannot hunt or harm you in any way. Yes, you can still be jumpscared and they can still be active by turning off the lights and by trying to break objects so you get scared, but they are unable to actively hunt you. Once the timer runs out, they can start hunting you.
If the ghost hunts you and kills you, you will be in a ghost spectator mode, this means you can still run around the building and see your friends/team and communicate with them, but you can't get hunted anymore and they can't see you. (They can see your chat though) You can also still actively see evidences such as book writing (if you look really well) or find objectives such as the bone or water. You can also still report evidences.
There's also a possibility to buy more equipment such as Sanity Soda, Crucifix, Strong Flashlight and additional products such as extra spirit boxes and things, but it's not neccessary and totally up to you. However I do recommend, if you were going to play Insanity mode (You gotta buy the gamepass with robux btw) or if you are with only 2 people on hard mode, to get a crucifix and use it. This means that if the ghost is going to hunt, you can still protect yourself. You might as well want to use these for the larger maps such as Clinic or Asylum.
I recommend to play this game with your friends instead of with strangers. It can be fun to play with strangers too, but sadly, not all players cooperate, know how to play the game or just get too scared and leave. If you play it with your friend or with more experienced players, it's easier to play this game. The first time I played this game it was hard to figure out what to do, until I finally got it. The moment I got it, the easier it became.
But yeah... Now my final thoughts about this game and of course, my rating. Was this game scary enough? Was it truly horror? Let's get on with it.
Like I said, the game is ghost hunting. Ghosts usually are scary. To me personally, the first time playing this game, I didn't know what to expect and sometimes got creeped out here and there, but once you know what you are going to see/experience, it isn't that scary anymore. It's actually really fun! I rate this game with an 8/10.
The reason for this is because yes, this game is fun but there's so much more I would love to see being added. I would love to communicate with a ghost and ask it more questions like "How did you die?", "Do you want us to go?", "Who is your target?" and more, and also make them respond to certain questions in a more specific way, for example, starting hunt on a specific target more often if the target asks the question. I did see on the developer blog that they would add new maps soon, which I can't wait for.
For now though, I really enjoyed playing and I will surely come back.
Do I recommend this game? Yes, if you'd like to get scared or are interested in ghost-hunting (which I recommend you not to do in real life) then this game is for you. If you aren't interested in getting scared or find ghosts scary, then do not try this or watch a video on YouTube about it to see if this game is scary.
